About the Artist

Dillard Richardson is a Charlotte-based artist, but has lived many other places. Growing up in a military family, moving was the norm. Although he’s settled, he believes that this moving around inspired his love of traveling and painting wherever he can.

Dillard works in acrylics, oils, watercolor, and pastel. He’s always loved painting outdoors and admires earlier artists who brought this style to its best expression. More recently, his studio paintings have prevailed. He creates paintings from both memory and reference photos, and his style has evolved to contemporary realism.

In addition to his visual art, Dillard also plays music, and can be found playing drums with friends in and around Charlotte. Many of his paintings are inspired by musical performance.

Dillard is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art, where he earned a degree in Studio Art and also studied photography and art history.

His primary intent is to express emotion through paint, and to provide a sense of excitement in painting.

He accepts commissions of various subjects, and has specialized in doing custom house portraits. Dillard’s paintings are in homes and offices throughout North Carolina.

 Commissions

Thank you for considering me for your commission. I have done a lot of different types of commissions, so I am used to consultation to arrive at a satisfying work of art.

Important considerations in determining the price and timeframe of a commission include size, medium, and subject.

  • SIZE — To start, consider the space where you intend to hang the painting and determine desired size. Size will impact pricing and timeframe -- for a larger work, allow for more time to complete.

  • MEDIUM — What medium do you prefer?  I can work with oil paint, acrylic paint, pastels, watercolor, or drawing.

  • SUBJECT — What specific ideas or content would you like in your artwork? Figures, buildings, location, lighting... these are some of the aspects that should be decided before work begins.

I have years of experience with this, and can offer suggestions for the work you have in mind.
Get in touch and we will discuss your project.

A commissioned work can be quite straightforward. I also want to allow for the subtle qualities that you may have in mind. After all, it’s a custom painting (or drawing) done for a specific idea for a specific client. I offer sincere effort to capture that idea.

One of my most popular commission options is House Portraits, a great way to commemorate a special home as a work of art. Check out some examples of these paintings here.
